Today we sit down with Third Coast Percussion minutes after their showcase concert at the 2nd annual Round Top Percussion Festival, in Round Top, Texas. We thought it would be good to preview DrumChattr podcast episode #6 which will feature an interview with founding member David Skidmore. Look for that post on Monday!

Rhythm’s Social Responsibilities

I spent a number of years studying with Gideon Alorwoyie, a master drummer and high priest of the Ewe tribe from Ghana, Africa. He has taught me a lot over the years and when I had the opportunity to travel to his village in the summer of 2007 I learned more than I ever expected about the Ewe tribe and gained a completely new perspective of music.

Gideon taught me the Ewe approach to percussion as well as the philosophies and views of music that the Ewe members value. Through this, he opened my eyes and taught me how to view rhythm as a true beauty of nature. (more…)

This video features the new Resnick Pavilion at the Los Angeles Contemporary Museum of Art (LACMA). Some of you may be familiar with Ben’s video Empty School in which Ben took a Canon 7D and filmed himself playing various percussion instruments and sounds throughout an empty high school. LACMA invited Ben to respond to the new architectural space after seeing his video “Empty School” on YouTube. The Resnick Pavilion opens to the public on October 2nd, 2010. Randy Max joined the Rotterdam Philharmonic as principal timpanist in 1988, where he performed the European premiere of the Timpani Concerto No. 1 by William Kraft. He has also performed extensively as timpanist with the Budapest Festival Orchestra, with whom he has appeared as soloist and toured North and South America, Europe and Russia.

Randy’s new timpani book and CD, Orchestral Excerpts for Timpani, provides authentic parts for 57 of the most-requested audition excerpts for timpani.
