Last Waltz by Tim Constable

Over the past week, I have been spending a lot of time looking for one more piece to fill out my percussion ensemble program. I found a lot of great pieces that I will be posting in the coming months. Today’s video features a performance by Ensemble 64.8 performing Last Waltz (2009) by Tim Constable.

This is the first of four movements contained in the work ‘Percussion Quartet No. 1′
by the young Australian percussionist and composer Timothy Constable, provides a new take on the traditional waltz. Taking from the dances’ lilting rhythms and reworking them to an unusual degree of complexity and syncopation, Constable creates a challenging and energetic percussion quartet that leads perfectly onto the other three movements of the work; ‘Tango,’ ‘Loop,’ and ‘Final Science.’ ‘Last Waltz’ contains sections of percussive counterpoint in which motives are passed between the performers, as well as powerful and energetic themes played in unison, creating dramatic moments of driving rhythm.

The work shown here was performed by Ensemble 64.8, the resident percussion ensemble at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. (Performers from left to right: Morris Palter, Fiona Digney, Trevor Saint, and Eric Retterer.) Nov. 20 2010 at the Davis Concert Hall located on the UAF Campus.

Piano/Video Phase by Steve Reich/David Cossin

This is a very cool phase-based piece performed by David Cossin of Talujon. Performed live, the player has a video of himself projected behind the live performance. You can both see and hear the phases, and additionally which of us doesn’t wish we had 4 arms every now and then.

(And for those of you who think “OK, I get it after the first few phases, do yourself a favor and watch the whole thing. Additional material is introduced after a full cycle of the original material.)

Mantra: “Post-Minimalist Percussion in Aisle 12”

From the NPR Field Recordings comes a video performance of Michael Gordon’s Timber, written for six two-by-fours, performed by Mantra. This performance was filmed live at Lowe’s Home Center. Mantra has been performing this piece for the past couple of months, including a performance at PASIC 2011 in Indy, and it is great to see that the group and the piece are being recognized on national broadcasts. Congrats Mantra and Michael Gordon!

Top Performances of the Year

Alex Ross, music writer and critic for the New Yorker Magazine and author of The Rest is Noise and Listen to This, has compiled a list of the past year’s most memorable classical performances.

One stand out on this list is John Luther Adam’s “Inuksuit” at the Park Avenue Armory.

Check out the complete list from Alex’s New Yorker Article.

Musique de Table

This is a pretty fun piece by Thierry de Mey. Generally, it’s performed as a trio, but with some good editing Jose Javier Navarro Lucas performs it here…with himself.

Have you performed this piece? For what venue? What was the response? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
