Alex Ross, music writer and critic for the New Yorker Magazine and author of The Rest is Noise and Listen to This, has compiled a list of the past year’s most memorable classical performances.
One stand out on this list is John Luther Adam’s “Inuksuit” at the Park Avenue Armory.
I originally wrote this for my other blog, which focuses on individual and business development. As I was writing it, I realized that this is also time for musicians, especially those in academia, to be setting goals. The examples used may focus on business, but the principles will prove true for musicians as well.
Enjoy! Shane Griffin
Most failed new initiatives, both individual and organizational, fail not because of a lack of skill, but because of one of two other factors: poor planning or poor communication. Both of these breakdowns can be mitigated with an effective goal-setting strategy. (more…)
Joe Morello, most known for his drumming with the Dave Brubeck Quartet died yesterday at his home in New Jersey at the age of 82.
Morello was famous for his delicacy, rhythmic acuity, and his execution of the difficult time signatures found in popular Brubeck tunes like “Take Five” and “Blue Rondo a la Turk”.
Today we pay homage to the jazz great and feature a clip of Morello with the Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1964, soloing on ‘Sounds of the Loop’. Do you have any stories, videos, or thoughts about Morello? Leave them in the comments below.

If you do not know Gavin Harrison’s drumming, you probably have been living under a rock. Gavin currently plays drum set with Porcupine Tree, a British “progressive rock” band formed by Steven Wilson in 1987. Today’s video features footage from a clinic Gavin did at the 2008 PASIC.
What is your favorite example of Gavin’s drumming? What is your favorite Porcupine Tree album? Leave a comment below and let us know what we should be checking out. Thanks to Axel Clarke for recommending this video.

Today’s video features movement 3 of Paul Lansky’s Threads. Threads (2005), for percussion quartet, was written for So Percussion and was premiered at Princeton University on 4/8/06. This video is a live performance from the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.
Has anyone performed Threads or see a live performance of the piece? What other pieces by Paul Lansky should we check out?
The creativity exhibited on the internet often blows me away. Some of the my personal favorites includes videos that feature Gavin Harrison (british drummer and member of Porcupine Tree). He released a book and video set back 2007 that featured his compositions. His video of Cymbal Song is still one of my favorite videos on YouTube.
If you enjoyed that video, also check out Leo DiAngilla’s Cymbal Song video.
Obviously, a lot of works goes into the production of these videos. Are there any other videos you can recommend that we should check out?
