Happy Birthday Vic Firth

This video features a recording of Vic Firth performing Also sprach Zarathustra with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. This recording was made in 1971 and features the Boston Symphony conducted by William Steinberg.

The first time I met Vic Frith was at a PASIC in Anaheim. It was the last day of the convention and I needed to buy some Gary Burton Vibe Mallets. He helped me pick mallets. Just giving me the time to talk mallets will be something I will very forget.

Thanks Vic!

Massive Band 2014 perform PanSon

It is hard to believe that over a year ago on Sunday, April 27, 2014, I hosted the Massive Band 2014 Steel Drum Concert at CSULB. It was an amazing concert featuring over 100 steel pan performers (see the list below). This video features steel pan virtuoso Andy Narell on a tune I wrote (shameless self-promotion alert) called PanSon.

The groups featured are:
CSULB STEEL DRUM ORCHESTRA (Dave Gerhart – director)
CABRILLO HIGH SCHOOL PANJAMMAS (Drew Holt – director)
CAMPBELL HALL SOLDIERS OF STEEL (HIGH SCHOOL) & STEEL PANDAS (JUNIOR HIGH) (Jason Bruns – director)
GRANADA MIDDLE SCHOOL PAN SQUAD (Jennifer Stampfl – director)
LAKEWOOD STEEL (Amanda Duncan – director)
RUSTY STEEL BAND (Andy Cobbs – director)
WESTMINSTER HIGH SCHOOL STEEL BAND (John Whatley – director)

Have a great weekend!

How to Read Music – Tim Hansen

Excellent! A must for any beginning music student. Please share.

Like an actor’s script, a sheet of music instructs a musician on what to play (the pitch) and when to play it (the rhythm). Sheet music may look complicated, but once you’ve gotten the hang of a few simple elements like notes, bars and clefs, you’re ready to rock. Tim Hansen hits the instrumental basics you need to read music.
