YouTube is an amazing resource! I can spend a lot of time listening to great performances, learning new percussion music or watching my idols perform and talk about their music. Vinnie Colaiuta is someone I could watch for hours! He is a legend in the drum set world and I remember seeing him play with Sting at the Hollywood Bowl during the Ten Summoner’s Tales tour (on Stings 40th birthday).
In this video, he talks about the groove in Seven Days.

Top Secret Drum Corps is a precision drum corps based in Basel, Switzerland. With 25 drummers and colorguard members, the corps became famous for its demanding six-minute routine performed at the Edinburgh Tattoo in 2003. With its invitation to Edinburgh, Top Secret became one of the first non-military, non-British Commonwealth acts to perform on the Esplanade at Edinburgh Castle.
Since its success in 2003, Top Secret was invited to return to Edinburgh in 2006 with a new and improved routine. They were invited a third time in 2009 and again in 2012. Under the leadership of Erik Julliard, the band is also responsible for the founding of the Basel Tattoo, a military tattoo show similar to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, now held annually in Basel.
Ivan Trevino and Michael Burritt perform Ivan’s marimba duo Catching Shadows. While some might know the percussion sextet version, Catching Shadows was actually first written as a marimba duo for Michael and Ivan to perform together.
Ivan and Michael both perform on Malletech instruments and mallets, and sheet music for Catching Shadows is available at IvanDrums.com.
I am writing this post today instead of my typical Percussion Education Weekly Reads. I have been on the road a lot the past couple of weeks. It is an adjustment for me and my family and we are learning how to make it work. Being on a plane or in the gym, I get to read more and I have read some great books this year. This week’s post is going to feature some of these books. It is a collection of non-fiction, business and fiction books. I hope you have the opportunity to pick up some of these and read them. For a complete list of the books I am reading/have read, check out my GoodReads profile. (more…)
Moon Chasers a marimba solo written by Mark Ford. The music is about two people in love who are separated over a long distance and connected only by the moon. The work, dedicated to Mark’s wife Ewelina, will serve as the musical foundation for the first movement of an upcoming concerto.
You’re the voice of a dream I had
You’re the voice and I’m so glad
You’re the weight of a dream of a life come true
There’s no denying
I sometimes run and chase the moon
I just can
I sometimes run and chase the views
And dream of you
